VOSCF, a joint venture between Van Oord Offshore & Sovcomflot, has successfully installed a Gravity Based Structure (GBS) for the offshore platform Berkut in the Arkutun Dagi field offshore Sakhalin Island. The GBS was designed and constructed by Kvaerner in the Russian mainland port of Vostochny in Nakhodka, for the Sakhalin 1 Project. The GBS has an overall weight of 160,000 tonness and is designed to withstand the forces imposed by ice fields up to 2m thick, seismic activity of the region, and winter temperatures which can drop to 44 degrees below zero. The Berkut unit will be the largest offshore production platform in Russia. The tow of the GBS commenced on 3 June on a 1,900km route to the Arkutun Dagi field approximately 25km off the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island.
